Like the video games, and unlike everything else here, this is not about filming. An anime is drawn, so no camera ever stood anywhere: Wikidata places it by its narrative location, meaning where the story happens, and that is what these pins mean.

It is also why the most famous titles are the vaguest ones here. Wikidata records the setting of Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Your Name as the whole of Japan, so they sit on a dot in the middle of the country: a fallback that stands in for the whole area rather than a place anybody can visit, and it disappears the moment somebody records something finer. And a real place an anime was modelled on is a different claim again, which this atlas does not make anywhere.
